A Short History

Approximately 2,000 years ago, the Uozu Buried Forest was a thriving primeval cedar forest that grew on what was then land. A combination of river floods and a subsequent rise in sea level caused the forest to become submerged and buried under layers of sand and mud. This unique environment, along with the constant flow of clean underground spring water, prevented the trees from decaying, perfectly preserving them for millennia.

The ancient forest remained hidden until its modern rediscovery in the 1930s during the construction of Uozu Port. Over 200 large cedar roots, some with diameters exceeding two meters, were excavated from the site, revealing a spectacular glimpse into the past. Due to its immense scientific and historical value, the Uozu Buried Forest was later designated as a Special National Natural Monument of Japan, leading to the construction of a museum to protect and showcase this extraordinary discovery.
