The area is also famous for its delicious local cuisine, especially the prized "Himi winter yellowtail" and other seafood fresh from the port. Soaking in the warm, chloride spring waters, which are known for their beautifying and warming effects, is the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring this charming coastal town. It feels great in the fall and winter to soak in a hot bath. Going in summer isn't a bad idea either, it makes the heat of the day feel not as bad!

What time of day do Japanese people usually go to the onsen?

The most popular time by far is in the evening, followed by the morning. If you can go in the middle of the day or early morning, those are the times when they are the least busy. Be careful because sometimes they close midday for cleaning.

Can I bathe in a hot spring even if I am not staying there?

It depends on the onsen. Some allow it and some do not. Some onsen also have specific times for staying guests. Please check the specific onsen hotel for more information.
