Easily accessible from both Kyoto and Nagoya, Shiga Prefecture is one of Japan’s most underrated travel destinations, offering everything from majestic castles and ancient shrines to charming canal towns and ninja heritage. Situated around Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake, Shiga offers a tranquil alternative to the hustle of major cities while preserving centuries of historical and cultural richness.
Why Visit Shiga?

Shiga Prefecture offers a blend of nature, culture, and history all surrounding its most iconic feature, Lake Biwa, the country’s largest freshwater lake. This beautiful body of water not only defines the region's landscape but also shaped its culture, cuisine, and way of life.

Nature lovers will fall in love with Lake Biwa’s scenic shores and clear waters, ideal for cycling, kayaking, and seasonal lake cruises. History buffs will find plenty to explore in Hikone Castle, one of only five original castles designated a national treasure, and Omi-Hachiman’s canal district, which offers a glimpse into Japan’s Edo-era. All throughout the prefecture there are plenty of festivals, crafts, and cuisine (featuring Omi beef, one of Japan’s top wagyu varieties) to keep anyone entertained.
Easily accessible from both Kyoto and Nagoya, Shiga offers a peaceful retreat from the bustle of the cities. Whether you’re into relaxing in lakeside villages, exploring ancient temples, or learning the way of ninjas, Shiga has something for everyone.

Don’t miss:
- The panoramic view of Lake Biwa from the top of the castle keep
- Genkyu-en Garden, a peaceful Edo-style landscape garden
- The nearby castle street with the regions premium wagyu beef, Omi-gyu
Note from our guides: Hikone’s mascot, Hikonyan (a samurai cat), often makes appearances at the castle!

Though it was destroyed shortly after Nobunaga’s death, the ruins and stone steps still speak of its former grandeur. Plus you can see a reconstruction of it in the nearby castle museum.
Note: The picture of the castle above is not in Shiga Prefecture. It is a replica of Azuchi Castle located in Ise, Mie Prefecture. However, there is a replica castle inside the Azuchi Castle museum next to the Azuchi Castle ruins.
6) Otsu

As the capital of Shiga Prefecture and gateway to Kyoto, Otsu combines city convenience with beautiful lakeside scenery. It’s home to several major temples and a lovely waterfront promenade.
Highlights:
- Miidera Temple, one of Japan’s four largest temples
- The Biwako Flower Fountain and boat cruises on Lake Biwa
- Otsu Matsuri (early October), a grand float festival with traditional music and dancing
7) La Collina – Omi Hachiman

Best for: Architecture lovers, foodies, eco-conscious travelers
Located in Omi Hachiman, La Collina is one of Shiga’s most surprising and aesthetically unique destinations. Designed by renowned architect Terunobu Fujimori, the building is instantly recognizable by its grass-covered roof. Part bakery, part nature preserve, La Collina is the flagship location of Taneya, one of Japan’s most beloved sweets makers.
Visitors can enjoy fresh baumkuchen made on-site, browse seasonal pastries and wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets), or relax at the café overlooking rice fields and scenic countryside.
