Where is Hirugami Onsen

Hirugami Onsen is located in Achi Village, which lies in the southern part of Nagano Prefecture.

It is situated in a mountainous area along the Kiso Valley region, surrounded by forests and nature, and is known for its quiet rural atmosphere. Hirugami Onsen is also positioned near the border with Gifu Prefecture and Aichi Prefecture, making it relatively accessible within Central Japan.

The nearest major city is Nagoya, which is about 70 to 80 kilometers to the southwest. The area is especially famous for its hot springs and for being one of the best places in Japan to view the night sky.

Why Stay in Hirugami Onsen

While Hirugami Onsen is a popular destination for those looking to soak in a hot spring bath after hiking the Nakasendo Trail, there are many other things to enjoy in the area.

The area has been recognized as the best place in Japan for stargazing in a recent government sky study. People come from throughout Japan for night photography and to witness the brightly lit sky. From spring to autumn, a nighttime gondola can take you up 1400 meters to the top of the mountain where you can get a unobstructed view of the sky.

In the morning, you can enjoy strolling the morning market where you can buy fresh produce or locally made souvenirs.

With river boat rides, skiing, golfing, and traditional craft making experiences, both short stay visitors and longer stay guests will have an enjoyable stay.

Accommodations in Hirugami Onsen range from traditional ryokan inns to modern hotels. Natural onsen baths are available at 21 of these accommodations, with several featuring private hot spring baths and stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.

 

How to Get to Hirugami Onsen

There are several relatively large cities which provide convenient access to Hirugami Onsen, either by direct transport or simple connections.

The easiest access to Hirugami Onsen is from Nagoya, which is the largest nearby city offering direct highway buses to Hirugami Onsen. You can take a direct bus from Nagoya’s Meitetsu Bus Center, which is located next to Nagoya Station. The bus ride takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes total. You will get off at the Hirugami Onsen stop, which is within walking distance of most inns and ryokan in the area.

You can also travel to Hirugami Onsen from Matsumoto by train and bus, although it requires a transfer and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours.
