For centuries, Toyama has been renowned as a center for traditional Japanese medicine. The Ikedaya Yasubei Shoten preserves this rich heritage, offering a unique glimpse into the city's pharmaceutical past.
A Short History

Toyama's history as a center for medicine dates back to the Edo period, when a local feudal lord promoted the "okigusuri" or "use first, pay later" system. This unique business model, where traveling peddlers would leave medicine chests at homes and only charge for what was used, made Toyama's remedies famous throughout Japan. Ikedaya Yasubei Shoten, established in 1936, preserves this legacy by continuing to manufacture and sell traditional medicines like the famous Hangontan. Today, the shop serves as both a pharmacy and a living museum, offering visitors a hands-on experience in traditional pill making.
