Hida-Furukawa

Only a 15-minute train ride from Takayama Station, Hida-Furukawa – sometimes simply referred to as Furukawa – is a picturesque little town that is notably quieter than its famous neighbor of Takayama. Much like Takayama, Hida-Furukawa achieved notable wealth during the Edo Period (1603-1868), and by fortune or designed, the town has managed to hold onto much of its historical charm.

The town offers a pleasant streetscape in the area known as ‘Shirakabe Dozogai Street’, typified by traditional storehouses lining a small canal along with craft stores, restaurants, cafes, sake breweries and some accommodation.

Hida-Furukawa-Takumikan-Craft-Museum

The Takumikan Craft Museum profiles the skill and expertise of the local timber industry while the town hosts its own festival each spring. Hida-Furukawa is an easy and enjoyable day-trip from Takayama and offers a little from the daytime crowds that typically congest its famous neighbor.
