Shima Onsen Area

Known as the ‘Forty Thousand Hot Spring’ town, Shima Onsen’s name more than hints at its numerous onsen sources and abundant thermal water. Indeed, the town boasts around forty separate hot spring sources heading the many hotels and guesthouses spread through the heavily forested valley.

Shima Onsen is less-developed than some other hot spring towns and its lay-out, spread along the river allows for scenic and relaxing walks through the forest. Autumn is particularly beautiful as the turning leaves colour the landscape red, gold, amber and brown.
