Whether you are first-time visitor or seasoned veteran of travel in Japan, escaping the congestion of the cities and exploring Central Japan has never been more appealing.

As host of the 1998 Winter Olympic Games, Nagano’s winter credentials are well-known. Boasting around 80 resorts in Nagano alone, with many more in the surrounding prefectures of Niigata, Gunma and Gifu, Central Japan has the greatest number of resorts in Japan and all within easy reach of Tokyo and the airports.

The region is home to the majority of Japan’s tallest mountains including the country’s three sacred mountains – Fuji, Haku and Tate. Inaccessible in winter due to heavy snowfall, spring and the melting snow opens all three mountains and many more to the world.

Central Japan offers outstanding hiking and mountaineering through spring, summer and autumn including Kamikochi – considered the jewel of the Chubu Sangaku National Park. Readily accessible from the major centres, walking the alpine trails of Kamikochi is one of Japan’s great outdoor experiences.
