Running from Tokyo to Osaka, the Tokaido Shinkasen is one Japan’s main shinkansen lines – connecting those to cities to other major destinations including Kyoto and Nagoya. Located in Aichi Prefecture, Nagoya lies within the Chubu region and as such, is one of the major access points for exploring Central Japan.
For international visitors using the Japan Rail (JR) Pass, it is worth nothing that the Nozomi service is not covered however you can use both the Hikari and Kodama services as you move from stations along the line.
Once in Nagoya, visitors will discover one of Japan’s great urban centres; a city that blends modern industry with a rich history and a great food scene.
Our ‘25 Things to Do in & Around Nagoya’ page lists some of the highlights waiting to be discovered in the city or nearby. Given the efficiency of the transport network in Japan, using Nagoya Station as your launching point from where to explore Central Japan opens-up lots of great destinations.
From August 20th onward, many shinkansen tickets will be discounted by 50% – an offer which also applies to the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Joetsu Shinkansen lines, and is expected to run until at least the end of March 2021. To take advantage of this offer, you simply need to register through Japan Rail East’s website and follow the directions to book and collect your tickets.
So time to get planning! For our friends overseas, discounted shinkansen tickets are expected to continue until next year. While the borders remained closed at this time, we hope that you will also be able to take advantage of the discounted travel and return to Japan as soon as possible.
