Running 20km from Unazuki Station to Keyakidaira Station, the Kurobe Gorge Railway is one of Japan’s most scenic train-rides. Taking approximately 80 minutes to complete the journey between Unazuki and Keyakidaira, the line follows the Kuronagi River along the heavily forested gorge and in doing so, passes over 20 bridges and through around 40 tunnels. Open to the public from mid-April to late-November, the Kurobe Gorge Railway can be accessed directly from Unazuki Onsen.
The line was constructed as part of the immense undertaking of the Kurobe Dam in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, the narrow-gauge train line is one of Central Japan’s most popular and scenic tourist experiences, best enjoyed from the train’s open-air carriages. Along the line, passengers have the option of disembarking at different stations from where they can walk or enjoy an ‘onsen’ (hot spring) with several restaurants and guesthouses nearby the stations.
