2020 Nagano Cherry Blossom Forecast
  • 2020 Nagano Cherry Blossom Forecast

Known as ‘sakura’, cherry blossoms are synonymous with Japan and are seen to embody the fragile beauty of life itself. As the weather warms in spring, the flowers bloom and Japan will emerge from the long, cold winter. Spirits rise while families and friends gather to wander underneath the beautiful canopy of pink and white, to share a meal, drink, or just ponder the fleeting beauty of the blossoms.

As always, the bloom will follow the warming weather from the south to the north. Predicting when peak bloom or ‘mankai’ will occur in each region, is serious business and closely watched and as of late January, the cherry blossom forecast for 2020 is now available.

While Tokyo is expected to be at peak bloom on March 18th, Nagano will as always be later. The mountainous terrain and higher altitude of Nagano means that the bloom can vary greatly but for 2020, the cherry blossom trees of Nagano are forecast to be coming to their best from around April 10th onward.

It is worth noting that Nagano spans a large region therefore predicting the exact date of bloom in a specific area is difficult. Yet the forecast for peak bloom from April 10th onward lines-up very well with our upcoming 1-Day Snow Monkeys & Cherry Blossoms in Nagano Tour!

Operating every day from April 5th to 25th, these tours are always some of our most popular. Starting and ending at JR Nagano Station, the tour combines a morning visit to the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, lunch, and afternoon of ‘hanami’ (flower viewing).

We monitor different sites around Nagano and select the best possible one for each tour. This makes each tour a unique experience for guests.

We also happy to announce that we will again be running our 1-Day Takato Castle Park Cherry Blossom Tour from April 11th to 15th*. This 5-day only tour takes you from Nagano Station to Takato Castle Park – regarded as one of the top three cherry blossom sites in the whole country!

Also starting and ending at JR Nagano Station, you will first make the journey to the south of Nagano. It’s a long road south but well-worth the effort. Arriving at the park around midday, you’ll first be treated to a traditional lunch before your guide sets you free to wander and explore the park, a truly stunning sight when in the full bloom.

Upon leaving the park, you then head toward Matsumoto Castle – one of Japan’s few remaining original castles and a registered National Treasure – to enjoy the beauty of the early evening illumination of the castle and surrounding blossom trees.

As we get closer to spring, we will publish further information about the blossoms and just when they are likely to bloom. We hope to see you in Nagano!
