It’s funny. It doesn’t seem so long ago that the snow still had a hold on us and the monkeys (just like us), were shivering away in the last clutches of Nagano’s beautiful but long, cold winter. Now, in mid-April, things feel very different…

With temperatures rising and the stunning cherry blossoms of spring finally in bloom in Nagano, it’s a fantastic time to visit the park! The monkeys seem truly content as they now bask or frolic in the spring warmth and forage for the fresh, tasty regrowth now slowly turning the landscape back to green.

April in the Snow Monkey Park mirrors March in its ups and downs, with warm days punctuated by cold snaps and even occasional snow! This is a good thing as the changing weather slightly confuses the monkeys and has them slipping back into the hot spring when the chilly weather suddenly rolls back in. And then, once the sun is back the monkeys are running about and enjoying life in the beauty of spring.

As we head to toward the end of the month, the cherry blossoms – so late to bloom this year – are finally emerging near the park in the township below, Kanbayashi Onsen. Visitor numbers are notably lower this time of year and through the second half of March and into April, tour guests have enjoyed some of the best days of the year with the monkeys coming in good numbers and the first babies for 2019 having now been spotted in the park!

The new mums are understandably cautious and keeping their distance to protect their new, adorable babies. It won’t be long before they let their guard down, relax, and reveal their furry bundles of joy to the world.

Needless to say, late-April and May will be a great time to visit the park and join a Snow Monkey Resorts tour!
