    HOW TO GET TO SHIGA KOGEN BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

    If you’d like to go to Shiga Kogen, Japan’s representative snow wonderland, this is certainly possible without too much hassle once you know each step of public transportation. This blog is to introduce the specific steps you need to take to get to Shiga Kogen on your own.

    First, Shiga Kogen is accessible from JR Nagano Station via local express bus as well as Yudanaka/Shibu Onsen village, the nearest hot spring village to the Snow Monkey Park. JR Nagano Station is located right at the middle of Hokuriku Shinkansen which connects Tokyo and Kanazawa in 3 hours.

    Access from JR Nagano Station to Shiga Kogen:

     

    Let’s begin with JR Nagano Station. There is an express bus departing to Shiga Kogen from the east exit of JR Nagano Station. Snow Monkey Park is located just in the middle point the express bus line between Nagano Station and Shiga Kogen. Therefore Shiga Kogen is also conveniently located for those who wish to see snow monkeys as well. The Snow Monkey Park bus stop is 45 minutes ride from Nagano Station, while Hasuike, the gateway bus terminal of Shiga Kogen, takes 1 hour + 10 minutes.

    * The 2016-2017 bus timetable from Nagano Station to Shiga Kogen area (Hasuike/Okushiga Kogen Hotel/Hotaru Onsen (Suzurikawa) – the bus stop for Yokoteyama Area)

    * The 2017-2018 timetable has not been updated (as of August 2017), but will be somewhat to similar to this. Please check our Magazine Page for the updated time schedule once the date of your travel gets closer.

    * For those who want to go to Ichinose area, its bus stop, “Ichinose,” is located right between Hasuike and Okushiga Kogen Hotel. The express bus stops there as well.

     

     

    Access from Yudanaka/Shibu Onsen to Shiga Kogen:

     

    Next, let’s talk for the case that you are already in Yudanaka/Shibu Onsen area and visiting Snow Monkeys. There are two buses heading for the Shiga Kogen highlands from Yudanaka Station; the Shiga Kogen Line heading for Hotaru Onsen (Suzurikawa) and the Shiga Kogen Express Line in the direction of Okushiga Kogen Hotel.

    As mentioned earlier, Hotaru Onsen is the name of bus stop for those who want to go to Yokoteyama Area. Okushiga Kogen Hotel is the bus stop for Okushiga Kogen/Yakebitaiyama Area, but also goes through Central Area as well. Both of bus line first goes through Shibu Onsen, Snow Monkey Park, and stop once at Hasuike, the gateway bus terminal to the rest of the highlands. Then the bus takes you either two directions mentioned above. Please see below for how the bus timetable from Yudanaka usually looks like.

    Shuttle Bus within Shiga Kogen:

    If you’re a skier or snowboarder it might be nice to know that shuttle buses run between the different areas in Shiga Kogen which is convenient because the Shiga Kogen is so extensive that one normally takes 3-5 days to complete all slopes. You can ride the bus for free if you have a lift tickets to show for. The free shuttle operates from 8:30 to 17:30.

     

    If you’d like to get on this bus from Yudanaka/Shibu Onsen area, you’ll have to pay the bus fare between the start of Shiga Kogen, Sun Valley Bus Stop and the bus stop you get off. You can also get a round ticket called “PARK & RIDE” from Yudanaka to Shiga Kogen for 800 JPY adult fare (13+) or 400 JPY child fare (6-12). A ticket can be purchased at Yudanaka Station.
