While the snow monkeys tend to be relaxed, they are not docile. There is a strong hierarchical system amongst the monkeys which is maintained with vigor. When the position of a certain macaque is threatened by another, fights break out. The monkey below was trying to provoke one of the elder, higher ranked monkeys. His challenge was met by his opponent and he was beat down with a severe cut on his face as a result. The photos below show him tending to his wound.
Here you can see him seeking comfort from a family member after the fight. The young monkey fought an opponent older and stronger which he thought he could take in his youthful foolishness. He certainly was taught a lesson.
Even if this monkey’s wound heals nicely, he will still have a big scar on his cheek. It is not unusual for the Japanese Macaques to have battle scars; most of the older male monkeys have scars littered over their bodies from battles won and lost.
