Description:

This tour is conducted for just you and the group members of your choosing. It can be difficult to see the major attractions in Northern Nagano via public transportation from Myoko Kogen as you have to change trains and buses quite often. Carrying all your luggage around while navigating the train/bus system can be challenging. This tour provides you with a private chartered vehicle which picks you up at your accommodation in the Myoko Kogen area, takes you to the Snow Monkey Park & Zenko-ji Temple complex. After the tour, we will drop you off at your location in Myoko or another location.

After leaving Myoko Kogen you will cross the countryside to get to Yamanouchi area where you can find the snow monkeys. A forest walk will take you to the snow monkeys where you will have up to an hour with the animals. You can take photos and wander around the Park during this time. You’ll have a knowledgeable English-speaking guide to tell you all the ins and outs about the furry animals.

After quality time with the monkeys you head back on the trail and get to a restaurant in the town for Japanese lunch. Having filled your belly we will head to the historic temple of Zenko-ji in Nagano City, a temple famous for housing the oldest Buddhist statue in Japan. Before arriving at the temple, we will make a pit-stop at a shop where you can try samples of Nagano’s famous apples.

Upon arrival to the temple site, your guide will show you around and tell you about the important features of Japanese Buddhism and of this temple complex in particular. Once you get to the main hall, which is one of Japan’s three biggest wooden temples, you can gain enlightenment by finding your way through a dark tunnel which runs under the temple.

After the temple, enjoy free time to explore the variety of shops in the main street to the temple.  Then, meet up with your guide and go to one of Nagano’s oldest sake breweries and sample some of their brand sake, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Learn about the process of sake-making while you try some of the best Japanese rice wine in the region.

Having warmed yourself with sake, you will be taken back to your location in Myoko Kogen*.

*Your drop-off point can be a different location like JR Nagano Station or other ski resorts according to your preference. Please see the FAQ for more detailed information about this.
