  • Visit the world-famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park and learn all about what makes the resident monkeys so unique
  • Enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant and experience Nagano’s renowned food culture
  • Spend an afternoon wandering through the ‘koyo’ or autumn leaves of Nagano, as you are transported to some of the region’s most colorful landscapes to enjoy the most Japanese of autumn activities: ‘momoji-gari’ or ‘autumn leaf viewing’

Known as ‘koyo’ in Japanese, the stunning colors of the autumn leaves capture the imagination and imbue the landscape with a special beauty. Perhaps best experienced in the mountain and valleys of Japan’s alpine heartland, this tour combines a visit to Nagano’s world-famous Snow Monkey Park with a leisurely afternoon strolling through an autumn landscape of amber, gold and orange.

The tour begins at JR Nagano Station at 9:35, where your guide (who will be waiting for you from 9:20) will greet you and quickly have you on your way out of Nagano Ciy and headed toward the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Arriving nearby the park, your guide will take you along the forest trail which leads you to the ‘Jigokudani’– rather dramatically translating to ‘Hell’s Valley’. Home to the only troop of monkeys in the world known to bathe in hot springs, there are no barriers separating you from the wild monkeys, making this a unique and memorable experience.

From there, it’s time to head to lunch at a nearby restaurant. As one of Japan’s largest food producing regions, Nagano’s food culture is renowned and your guide will always be happy to talk all things food as you sit down to an enjoyable autumn lunch around 13:00.

Well-filled by lunch you then head to the hills for an afternoon of wandering among the autumn leaves or ‘koyo’. Known for their beautiful array of colors – gold and amber, brown, red, and yellow – the leaves are synonymous with autumn and the treasured by many Japanese who practice ‘momoji-gari’ or ‘autumn leaf viewing’.

Sites are selected based on where the leaves are in best condition on the day of your tour with potential destinations including Joshinetsu Kogen National Park/Shiga Kogen, the Toguakushi, and the rural villages of the Matsukawa Valley.

As the afternoon draws to a close your guide will have you board the tour bus and begin your journey back to Nagano Station, where the tour is scheduled to conclude between 17:30-18:30*.

*Tours will end at slightly different times depending on the chosen location for each day’s autumn leaves. We monitored the condition of the leaves at various sites to select the best possible location for each day’s tour.
