Starting from Nagano and concluding in the historic city of Kanazawa this tour takes you to the “Roof of Japan” and the fabled Snow Walls of the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. Situated in the dramatic alpine landscape of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, this is one of Japan’s most iconic and unique sights, accessible only in spring and early summer and via a series of different mountain transports. Led by an English-speaking guide, you will be accompanied on every leg of your journey to the Roof of Japan and back down again. With the convenience of pickup (Nagano) and drop-off (Kanazawa) at shinkansen stations, this tour is the perfect way to experience one of Japan`s more remote and stunning landscapes.

Your guide will meet you at JR Nagano Station at 08:30 (the guide will be waiting from 08:20 onward) and have you board the tour bus to begin your journey toward the fabled Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. Known as the “Roof of Japan”, the route passes through a dramatic mountain landscape of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, home to the iconic Snow Walls. Rising to up to 20 meters in height, the corridor cut through the snow is one of Japan`s most impressive and iconic sights.

Arriving at Ogisawa Station around 10:15 your guide will give you time to prepare for your ascent before boarding the Kanden Tunnel trolley bus at 11:00 – the first of a variety of mountain transports you will utilize to reach the summit.

First stop is the Kurobe Dam. Constructed between 1956 and 1963, this immense structure require the labor of up to 10 million people and is Japan’s highest dam. A source of national pride and emblematic of man’s attempts to conquer nature, your guide give you time to enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, before starting the next leg of your journey toward the top.

The Tateyama Ropeway is a highlight of your adventure upwards. Spanning 1700 meters, you will be transported upward to the final stop of Daikanbo, before taking the final trolley bus to the final station, Murodo. At 2450 meters, this is Japan’s highest station – an isolated outpost in an inhospitable, dramatic landscape.

Vast amounts of snow fall on the landscape each winter making it inaccessible until spring brings warming temperatures and the chance to carve a route through the ice. Rising up to 20 meters above, the stunning snow corridor is one of Japan`s most iconic sights dwarfing people and tours buses alike!

The snow walls are at their most impressive from April to June, slowing melting away through summer to expose a beautiful alpine landscape of green fields, blue lakes and ponds, and colorful mountain flowers.

Your guide will allow you between 1.5-2 hours to stroll the area (depending on the pace of your), including time to explore the museum and surrounding area. At approximately 15:00 your guide will collect you and begin the simpler journey down the other side of the mountain by first boarding the Tateyama Highland Bus headed for Bijodaira. Once at Bijodaira you`ll make the quick transfer to the final cable car which will quickly whisk you down to Tateyama Station.

Arriving at the station at around 16:15 your tour bus will be waiting for you and your guide will get you onboard and on your way toward Kanazawa with the tour scheduled to conclude at JR Kanazawa Station at 18:30*.
