HOW TO GET TO MYOKO KOGEN – NAGANO SKI RESORTS INFO

Located approximately 30KM (<1 hour drive) directly north of Nagano City and 285KM (3.5 hours drive) to the northwest of Tokyo, the resorts making-up Myoko Kogen are known for their deep powder and relaxed approach to side and backcountry skiing, making them a preferred destination for advanced skiers and snowboarders. While small, the resorts of Myoko Kogen cater for all levels with the big drawcard being the huge amount of snow you’ll find there, easily accessible from the following points of origin:

Between the resorts of Myoko Kogen

Myoko Kogen is comprised of 5 separate resorts: Akakura Onsen and Akakura Kanko, Seki Onsen, Ikenotaira, and Suginohara. From Dec 23rd to Mar 4th, the Myoko Shuttle is the easiest way to get from one resort the the next. The shuttle service runs throughout the day, costing JPY500 (one way) or JPY1000 (return).

From Joetsu-Myoko Station

Bus: disembark the shinkansen at JR Joetsu-Myoko Station and exit via the East Exit, where a shuttle bus operates to Akakura Onsen, approximately 25km and taking 1 hour (you also have the option of a private taxi). Through winter – Dec 23rd to March 4th – there are 3 shuttle buses per day, costing JPY1,100 to Akakura Onsen/KankoJPY1,200 to Ikenotaira, and JPY1,300 to Suginohara.

From Myoko Kogen Station via JR Nagano Station

Train: disembark the shinkasen at JR Nagano Staion and transfer to the Kita Shinano Line for Myoko Kogen Station, approx. 45 minutes and costs JPY830. Once at Myoko Kogen Station, you have the option of a local bus or taxi, approx. 30 minutes to Akakura Onsen.

Nagano station

From Tokyo stations – Tokyo / Ueno / Shinjuku

Train: take the Hokuriku Shinkansen line to either JR Nagano Station or Joetsu-Myoko Station, from either Tokyo or Ueno Stations. The journey takes approx. 2 hours (depending on which train you take) and costs approx. JPY8000-9000 to Nagano and JPY9000-10,000 to Joetsu-Myoko (one way).

The Kagayaki and Hakutaka services starting from Tokyo Station are the fastest while the Asama service, which originates at Ueno Station, is slower, stopping at more stations en route to Nagano.

Shinkansen

There are numerous services each day and all trains can be used with JR Rail Pass, noting that seats on Kagayaki services must be reserved in advance. Once at JR Nagano Station, follow the directions above.

tokyo station

From Narita Airport

Train: two express train services connect Narita to central Tokyo:

The Keisei Skyliner runs from Narita to Ueno Station. It takes approx. 4o minutes to reach Ueno Station and costs JPY2450 for adults (13+) and JPY1240 for children (6-12). Once at Ueno Station, follow the directions above.

Narita Skyliner

The Narita Express (NEX) runs from Narita to Tokyo Station. It takes approx. 1 hour to reach Tokyo Station and costs JPY3020 with trains departing every 30 to 60 minutes. Once at Tokyo Station, follow the directions above

Bus: the Nagano Snow Shuttle connects the airport to Myoko Kogen, stopping at the Akakura Onsen Bus Stop. There are up to 4 services each day, taking approx. 5.5 hours and costs JPY11,600.

From Haneda Airport

Train: take local lines to Tokyo Station or Shinjuku Station and follow the directions above.

Bus: the Nagano Snow Shuttle connects the airport to Myoko Kogen, stopping at the Akakura Onsen Bus Stop. There are up to 2 services each day, taking approx. 5.5 hours and costs JPY11,600.
