NOZAWA & IIYAMA
The hot springs of Nozawa Onsen were discovered in the 8th century and since that time have been known for their healing properties. Like the Japanese for centuries before them, international visitors now head to Nozawa to soak their bodies (and souls) in the ancient springs. The village is home to 13 'soto-yu' (free public baths), which visitors are encouraged to enjoy like a local. Winter brings the village to life as powder snow buries the village and mountains and turns Nozawa into one of the most popular ski resorts in all of Nagano.
A short distance in the valley below Nozawa Onsen, Iiyama is historic town serviced by JR Nagano Station and the Hokuriku Shinkansen (Bullet Train) line. Iiyama's historic past underlies its contemporary character as a hub within an agricultural landscape, and as such, plays host to festivals including the Nanohano Flower Festival (every May), which celebrate the innate connection between people and nature that defines the region.
