Readily from Tokyo using the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Nagano is the largest city and gateway to the region. As host of the 1998 Winter Olympic Games, Nagano is known for its epic snow and some of the best ski resorts in Asia, while life in the city revolves around its most famous cultural site, Zenko-ji Temple. Founded in the 7th century, Zenko-ji remains one of the most important Buddhist temples in Japan while Nagano is also home to the forest shrines and mountain ninjas of Togakushi and hidden samurai town of Matsushiro.
