MATSUMOTO

Famous for its historical importance, cultural treasures and nearby natural splendors, Matsumoto is the perfect destination for visitors who want to explore the beauty and rich tradition of central Japan. You can experience the atmosphere of samurai-era Matsumoto Castle before strolling along the nearby historical shopping streets including Nakamachi and Nawatedori, more commonly referred to as "frog street", where you'll encounter all types of frog-themed gifts and knick-knacks. While Matsumoto enjoys a long and rich history which makes it an ideal destination for history buffs, it is also a youthful and lively city with a strong arts scene stemming from prominence of the city's Museum of Art and hometown of Japan's most famous contemporary artist, Yayoi Kusama.

Matsumoto is also used as a gateway to the surrounding mountains of the Northern Japanese Alps. Nestled deep within the mountains, Kamikochi is a popular destination for hikers and a sacred place of mountain worship given its grand scale, pristine nature, and numerous natural 'onsens' (hot springs). Soaking in the milky white water of the mountain pools is a unique and unforgettable experience, with spiritual significance for many Japanese.
