Snow Monkey Resorts is excited to announce a new day tour from Hakuba for the coming 2018/19 winter season – our Snow Monkey Winter Tour!
This tour combines visits to the famous hot spring-bathing monkeys of Jigokudani, Mastumoto’s iconic castle, and Daisekkei, one the region’s most acclaimed ‘sake’ breweries in a fun day tour suitable for adults and children alike! It’s the ideal way to combine your Hakuba adventures with some of Nagano’s most popular sites and experiences!
The tour begins with pickup at three convenient points in Hakuba before heading toward the Snow Monkey Park. Established in 1964 as a conservation area for a local troop of Japanese macaques which was under threat from development, the park attracts visitors from all over the world who come to see the monkeys engage in the unique behavior of bathing in ‘onsens’ (natural hot springs) – the only troop of monkeys in the world known to do so! Your guide will introduce you to what makes the troop so unique and allow you time to observe them in close proximity, in the beauty and snow of winter.
Having visited the monkeys we head to a nearby restaurant, Hotarutei, for a well-deserved lunch in the warmth and comfort of the 160-year old traditional building. Nagano is known for the abundance and quality of its produce, and our guides are always happy to discuss the region’s acclaimed food culture.
After lunch, you can relax as we head to Matsumoto Castle, an iconic structure synonymous with the city it stands guard over, against a backdrop of the snow-covered Japanese Alps.
With earliest construction dating back to the early-16th century, this 6-storey structure is one of only four original castle remaining in Japan, and along with Himeji and Kumamoto Castles, and is considered one of the preeminent architectural treasures of Japan – listed as a National Treasure.
You will have time to explore the castle grounds and enter the castle, climbing all the way to the top, should you wish to do so.
From there the tour begins the journey back to Hakuba but not before briefly stopping at one of the region’s acclaimed ‘sake’ breweries, Daisekkei. Established in 1898, Daisekkei takes advantage of the abundant and pure waters running out of northern Japanese Alps and high quality local rice, to produce an enticing range of ‘sake’.
As Japan’s national beverage, ‘sake’ is a rich and deep world of terminology and tastes, all of which take a lifetime to master. This quick stop gives you a chance to sample some of the region’s best ‘sake’, to make sure you are suitably warmed before for the final journey back to Hakuba.
The tour ends where it began with drop-off at the same points between 18:15 and 18:30, where the guide will say their goodbyes and wish you well with your adventure in Hakuba.
No visit to Japan is complete without taking in the cultural sites and unique experiences that define the country and are certain to leave a lasting impression!
Whether you are traveling by yourself, with family or friends, our tour is designed for the enjoyment and interest of both adults and children; a unique way to combine your visit to the famous Snow Monkey Park with the history and adventure of Matsumoto Castle and indulgent warmth of Daisekkei’s acclaimed ‘sake’. We look forward to welcoming many new guests to Hakuba and Nagano this winter!
