It has snowed in the Snow Monkey area!
Winter has finally begun with the first snowfall of the 2017/2018 season. The people living in this area woke up in a wintry world, with more snow than people had thought would fall in one night. In the photo above, you can see some of the ski slopes close to Yudanaka.
If you go from Yudanaka Onsen to Kanbayashi Onsen, where the entrance to the Snow Monkey Park is, the amount of snow on the ground increases. At Kanbayashi Onsen you arrive to the trail entrance of the Snow Monkey Park.
After the entrance, the trail becomes unpaved and a little muddy now the ground is snowed under. You will walk along this trail for 25 minutes to get to the area of the Park.
After you’ve walked the walk, you will have arrived to the Jigokudani Onsen Valley, the place where you can find the Monkey Park. Having climbed up the stairs, you get a lovely view of Korakukan, the ryokan right next to the Park!
Inside the park the monkeys roam! It is still a little on the warm side for them so they will not all sit in the pool just yet. If you want to see a large number of them bathing, the best time of day would be early in the morning, when the sun isn’t at its strongest. They are still lovely to look at, as they are now very fluffy with their winter fur.
If you plan on seeing the monkeys, dress warmly with good boots as normal shoes easily get soaked or cold while you’re walking on the unpaved trail to the Park. If you have no warm clothes or boots with you, you can buy or rent snow boots whatever you need at the Info & Gift Shop in front of the trail entrance.
