CHANGES IN THE JIGOKUDANI MONKEY HIERARCHY

A shift in power has occurred within the Jigokudani monkey troop. Togura 95, who has been in power for the past 6 years, has been displaced by Tomamu 96. This has caused the balance of power to shift. The number 2 monkey (Tomamu 96) has become number one, number 3 has become number 2, etc. Togura 95 is still out there, wandering the mountains freely. He has however, the support of the troop no longer. His lieutenant has found a way to rise to the top of the troop and is now the new monkey boss!

    The monkey boss was:

    and is now (the middle):

    Number 2 monkey

Tomamu 96 has already been introduced in another article but here is a recap. He can be recognized by the big scar on his left cheek, having been wounded in a fight at an earlier age. He is the oldest male monkey in the troop at the moment, with the number two and three at the age of 17 and 13 respectively. He is alway a bit reluctant to let himself be seen and likes to go to a high point to watch over the troop.

How long Tomamu 96 will stay in power remains to be seen. He is one of the oldest monkeys in the troop and his physical strength is quickly waning. It might just be that his lieutenant, Tooami 00, will take over the lead of the troop. This monkey is strong, young, and more social, almost always down in the Park with the other monkeys. Only time will tell but we will keep you updated!
