    SHIGA KOGEN: SKIING IN SPRING

Skiing season in Japan usually ends around the end of March, when the temperature starts rising and the snow starts melting. However, the Shiga Kogen Highlands hold to a different schedule.

The Shiga Kogen ski resorts are open for a long season, going from the end of November until the beginning of May. Shiga Kogen offers the highest elevation for skiing in all of Japan which makes it possible for skiing/snowboarding to be done until the beginning of May (some of the lower ski resorts might be closed due to insufficient snow in spring). The last week of skiing is Golden Week, Japan’s most beloved national holiday week. A lot of Japanese come to Shiga Kogen for their last chance at skiing in this week.

What makes skiing in spring attractive is the weather, the limited amount of people than the top season, and the reduced price of a skiing pass (3800 yen instead of 5000 yen for a day ticket). The spring ski season is from April 1st until the end of the season. The weather in winter can be extremely cold, with a lot of dips below zero. Temperature in spring is more stable and mild, which makes for a more comfortable outdoor experience. Therefore, it could be the best time for the first timers to start skiing/snowboard.

So if you’re in the area in Spring, give going to the ski slopes a go. You might like sliding down the slopes in spring better than skiing/snowboarding in winter.
