    LITTLE SNOW MONKEYS PLAYING ABOUT

This year there were 40 Japanese macaques born in the Jigokudani Monkey Park. This is double the amount compared to most years. Seeing as the Japanese macaques only give birth once every other year, this would suggest that next spring only very few snow monkeys will be born.

It has already been three months since the first snow monkey babies were born and the little macaques have started to wander from their mother for a bit. This gives their mother time to do whatever it is she wants to do, and lets the babies explore the area.

The babies are learning more and more how to use their arms and legs to climb. You can observe the learning experience during this time of year. The baby snow monkeys still get breastfed, but they can also now find their own food by walking about and climbing small plants. Their climbing skills aren’t good enough yet for climbing trees, but climbing things close to the ground is no problem.

Most of the baby snow monkeys have a buddy with whom they play frequently. They climb together and sometimes wrestle too. This is the time in their lives where they start to really bond and establish camaraderie.
